STATE ASSOCIATION AWARDS $76,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | May 1, 2026 | Topeka, KS: The Kansas Independent College Association is a 501(c)3 that develops and enhances the competitive standing of its 21-member independent, non-profit, regionally accredited, degree-granting colleges and universities and strives to assure opportunities and choice in higher education for all students. Part of that work is to manage and disseminate scholarships to celebrate our diverse and talented student community who demonstrate a commitment to excellence, virtue, and integrity. Today, KICA is proud to recognize 47 students who have won at least one of three annual KICA scholarships.

First, a volunteer panel of 7 reviewers helped select the 18 winners of our Green & Gold Scholarships. The reviewers hail from around the country and have a diverse collection of business, government, community, and education expertise. Heather Morgan of the Kansas Association of Community College Trustees, Arthur Gonzales, a recent KICA graduate, Scott Tschudy of Martin Pringle, Suzanne Vieth of NAICU, Eric Armstrong of INAalert, Emily Wallace of Acadeum, and Johnny Sanders of SOMACyber.

New Horizons Scholarship - Recognizing first-generation students (3 @ $2,000 each):

• Natalie Aguinaga, a Kansas Christian College Business Leadership major from Oklahoma City, OK with a 3.76 GPA
• Aileya Sath, a Baker University Exercise Science Major from Wichita, with a 3.60 GPA
• Catherine Thomas, a University of Saint Mary Nursing major from Lawrence, with a 3.27 GPA

Growing Kansas Future Scholarship - Recognizing students from outside of Kansas who commit to staying in Kansas after graduation (3 @ $2,000 each):

• Ashley Davis, an Exercise Science major at Ottawa University from Pekin, IL with a GPA of 4.0
• Abigail Eckert, a Health Science major at Southwestern College from Joplin, MO with a GPA of 4.0
• Corbin Grant, a Health Science major at Southwestern College from Stillwater, OK with a GPA of 3.53

Better Life Degree Completion Award - Recognizing students who return to complete their degree after a period of absence (1 @ $1,500):

William Tschudy Scholarship for Business & Public Service - Recognizing a student planning a graduate education to use business skills in service of the public (1 @ $1,500):

• Madyson Kline, an Applied Mathematics-Pre Actuary major at University of Saint Mary from Basehor with a GPA of 3.59

Future Leaders in the Arts (2 @ $750 each):

• Andrew Clark, a Cleveland University - Kansas City Chiropractic major from Anthony with a 3.27 GPA
• Alina Nguyen, a Kansas Wesleyan University Pre-Physical Therapy major from Salina with a 3.53 GPA

Each nominated student had to submit detailed essays about their leadership training, their future career goals, and why they chose an independent option for their higher education. Here are some excerpts:

“The resources offered by my college have also played a significant role in preparing me for my role. Career development resources, including resume workshops, mock interviews, and networking events, have helped me present myself professionally and connect with industry leaders. Academic advising has ensured that I stay on track with my coursework and align my classes with my long-term goals.”

“At a smaller school it just feels easier to build real connections with people. I didn’t want my college experience to be all about meeting tons of new faces but never actually getting to know anyone on a deeper level. I wanted to be somewhere I could form genuine friendships, work closely with others, share ideas, and grow together over time.”

“The university acts as a bridge to the local economy, with professors who are deeply networked with regional business leaders. For a business major, this ecosystem is transformative. Through these institutional connections, I have gained access to internships and job shadowing that offer real-world applications of my studies.”

Next, KICA is proud to announce the 2026 Maud Wyatt Recognition Scholarship Recipients. KICA established the Maud Wyatt Recognition Scholarship to honor Maud Wyatt, whose generous bequest has supported the work of KICA and its institutions since 1961. These 21 recipients are all full-time, degree seeking students on the cusp of graduation, and have each demonstrated excellence in academics, character, and integrity. These winners have encouraged their peers to build bright, dynamic futures, all while maintaining GPAs of 3.5 or above. The winning essays speak of a remarkably bright future in Kansas.

“The promise of becoming a well-rounded individual, along with the inviting atmosphere of [my college], enticed me to choose a KICA institution. Thus far, I have only been proven right in my suspicions of the opportunities and personal development that awaited me in choosing a private institution. A private institution founded in the heartland of Kansas, allowing me to stay closer to home while using the educational opportunities presented to me in my home state.”

“I believe I can find success in becoming a better friend to those around me, in becoming the mother I aspire to be, and in creating the life that I have dreamt for myself. I find great comfort in knowing that all of these future endeavors are possible due to the pivotal experiences I have had during my time at [my school].”

“I want my students to feel safe in my classroom, so creating a community where they know that they are valued, seen, and supported will make a big difference in the environment I want to create. I also think that creating these relationships among other future educators is important because the impact will reach a broader group of students than just my own.”

Finally, we also announce the recipients of scholarships funded by KICA’s partnership with the Gary Sinise Foundation Valor Scholarship in Honor of Mac Sinise. These scholarships provide support for students who are VA Dependents Education Assistance Chapter 35 eligible students: spouses and children of deceased or 100% disabled U.S. Armed Forces Veterans. KICA is again awarding $25,000 to our 2026-27 recipients!

The Valor Partners Foundation (www.valorpartners.org) provides support for students who are Section 35 eligible individuals – the survivors and dependents of individuals killed or 100% disabled while serving in the U.S. armed forces.  The funds they provide are for the entire cost of a college education – tuition, fees, books, room and board, and other living expenses required to earn a college degree

Starting in Award Year 2025-2026, the Valor Partners Foundation will provide a total of $25,000 a year to KICA to distribute to eligible students across our membership.  Institutions will have to match the portion they receive from these funds in making awards to eligible students.

$20,500 Awarded to Kansas Students

Topeka, KS, April 5th, 2024: The Kansas Independent College Foundation has awarded new scholarships to 21 notable winners for the third year, using a portion of the annual donations to the KICF Gift Fund.  Recognizing particularly meritorious students through a competitive process is a powerful way to support their educational endeavors and help bring attention to the high quality of our students and the work of our independent colleges across Kansas. KICA received over 105 total nominations for its annual collection of merit-based scholarships.

In announcing our 2024 Green and Gold Scholarship recipients, KICF President Matt Lindsey says, "Everyone deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and achieve their goals, regardless of their background or circumstances. Kansas will succeed when it supports all students. These scholarships are our contribution to that support.”

A volunteer panel of 10 judges helped select the 17 winners. The reviewers hail from around the country and have a diverse collection of business, government, community, and education expertise. They are Tami Bartunek, Office of U.S. Senator Roger Marshall;  Brandon Brungardt, Hutton Corporation; Shane Carter, Kansas Department of Education; Chris Crook, KanREN; Abel Frederic, United Way of the Plains; Laura Hayden, Pioneer College Caterers; Bradon Owens, Pharos Resources; Bryan Schultz, Kansas State Fair; Scott Tschudy, Martin Pringle; and Suzanne Vieth, NAICU.

In reflecting on the judging process, Laura Hayden of PCC shared, “It was heartwarming to hear from so many student essays, the aspirations, and blessings they realized from being part of tight-knit and caring campus communities.  It was evident that KICF has a wonderful network of higher education campuses who not only focus on the student’s success but support the individual.”

On campus, Taylor is an active leader, “Being a student ambassador, I frequently meet incoming freshmen or transfers before they come to campus. I give them their tours of campus while also sharing my positive experience…I would love to be a positive influence on their decision to attend the wonderful college that I love so much.”

• DreShaun Flowers, a Business Administration major at Southwestern College from McAlester, OK
• Charley Monahan, a Marketing & Management major at University of Saint Mary from Easton. A liberal arts education impacted Charley’s business education, “While sticking with a business degree, I really did enjoy Dr. Peterlin's public speaking class, so the following semester I took her Honors Seminar, Digital Storytelling, and from there she convinced me to at least minor in Digital Communications. Dr. Peterlin has supported me since; She sees the potential in me and helps to guide me through my courses, offers advice, is always willing to listen, and is constantly pushing me to be and do better.”

Future Leaders in Education (2 @ $750 each):

• KenzieCooper, an Elementary Education major at McPherson College from Wamego
• Natalie Maxhimer-Rodriguez, an Elementary Education major at Baker University from Baldwin City. Thinking on the future, Natalie shared, “I would love to become a principal. I think that students today need administrators who are fully present, not cooped up in their office, and making it a point to interact with students and better their lives each day. I want to be this person for many students. Young people deserve someone to look up to and someone who cares about their development.”

KANSAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE JOINS STATEWIDE ASSOCIATION

The school formerly known as Kansas City College and Bible School becomes the 21st member of the Kansas Independent College Association

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Topeka, Kansas, June 29th, 2023 – Kansas Christian College in Overland Park, KS has joined the Kansas Independent College Association (KICA) as their 21st member institution. KICA, founded in 1970, is a not-for-profit organization that provides collaborative programming and state-wide advocacy to enhance its members' capacity to offer an affordable and valuable postsecondary education to all students

To be a KICA member institution, a Kansas college or university must be (1) Non-profit, (2) Regionally accredited, (3) Undergraduate degree offering, (4) Providing the majority of its educational offerings within the state of Kansas, and (5) In compliance with Kansas statutes regarding open enrollment. As Kansas Christian College, with an 80-year history of faith-based education, meets those five criteria, Monsignor Stuart Swetland, KICA Board Chair and President of Donnelly College stated, “Private education is essential to the common good. In particular, faith-based education serves a vital role in higher education institutions. At KICA, we see this as a joint effort. I am pleased to join with my fellow members in welcoming Kansas Christian College to our network and celebrate all that this fellowship will mean for Kansas higher education and its students.”

KCC is a ministry focused institution developing students with a life-long love for learning whether they are preparing to enter the marketplace or full-time ministry. With that in mind, Chad Pollard, Kansas Christian College President says, "We are delighted to have been approved for full membership with KICA; we have eagerly awaited this opportunity.  I appreciate how Matt, and my presidential colleagues within KICA have already made me feel a part of the community through our period of associate membership.  KICA is doing tremendous work on behalf of its member institutions across our great state, and we are excited to be a part of this higher education community as a full member."

As to the accomplishment of growing the organization’s membership, KICA President, Matt Lindsey shared, "It is a testament to the strength of Kansas' private colleges that we are growing as a community. Topeka, KS, April 28th, 2023: The members of the Kansas Independent College Association thank the leaders in the Kansas Legislature for continuing to try to correct an injustice done to the Kansans who choose a small private college education. We are grateful that the omnibus budget again takes steps to restore the historically fair approach to the state’s only true need-based aid program – the Kansas Comprehensive Grant.

Kansas’ private colleges educate nearly 25,000 students – more than 12% of the college students in the state. Each year, more than 20% of the college graduates in Kansas come from Kansas’ private colleges.  However, the state only provides 1% of its budget to support those students.  Nearly 99% of the state’s higher education spending goes to the public universities and their students.

The graduates of our state’s private colleges are critical to the Kansas workforce across multiple sectors, and throughout all areas of the state.  A significant share of the state’s teachers, nurses, IT professionals, mental health professionals, and business leaders graduate from one of the twenty private colleges. 

In short, private college students are Kansans too.

Their choice to pursue a smaller, more personally-centered education over the goliath public universities should not mean those students are any less deserving of the state’s support. Moreover, Kansas’ private institutions are essential economic engines in eighteen communities, generating more than $1.1 billion in annual economic impact.  Much of that is concentrated in smaller communities whose future prosperity is intricately tied to the fate of the college. The state’s interest should be in the ongoing vibrancy of these private colleges.

We are thus extremely thankful that the Legislature recognizes the value of private colleges in the state and the importance of supporting all Kansas students in line with time-honored commitments embedded in the Kansas Comprehensive Grant. In the FY2023 budget, the Governor and Legislature added approximately $100 million in new funding to the public universities. Making a $5 million investment in the Kansans who choose to attend a Kansas private colleges is welcome.

We ask Governor Kelly to sign the omnibus budget as presented, and we hope she sees that our Kansas students are just as deserving of the state’s support as they have always been.

8,271 jobs created or sustained by economic activity

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Topeka, Kansas, October 26, 2022 – The 20 colleges and universities that comprise the Kansas Independent College Association contributed over $1.1 billion to the state’s economy in FY 2021, according to an economic contribution analysis released today by the Kansas Independent College Association. The study further concludes that the economic activity of the system supported or sustained 8,271 jobs throughout the state.

“The private, nonprofit colleges and universities of Kansas play an essential role in growing Kansas’ economy -- through talent development and opening the doors of educational opportunity for the citizens of Kansas,” said Matt Lindsey, president of Kansas Independent College Association. “It’s also important to note that through their annual operations and the impact of alumni after graduation, our colleges and universities have a significant impact on their local economies and the state as a whole.”

The study was conducted by Parker Philips, a nationally recognized consulting firm specializing in economic impact analysis. Nichole Parker, a principal partner at Parker Philips, said, “Economic analysis is an objective way to measure the significance of an organization in the state and regional economy. The private, non-profit colleges and universities in Kansas clearly make a major contribution to their local, state, and regional economies economically and societally.”

Among the findings in the study:

• The $1.1 billion total economic contribution of Kansas’ independent colleges and universities in FY 2021 included $859.2 million direct and $234.2 million indirect and induced spending, and was the result of operational spending, capital spending (3-year average), payroll and benefits paid to employees, student spending, and visitor spending.
• The operations of Kansas’ independent colleges and universities support or sustain a total of 8,271 jobs – 3,654 jobs are at the colleges and universities themselves.
• Through its local spending and the jobs it supports or sustains, Kansas’ independent colleges and universities generate $65.7 million in state and local taxes.
• The students, staff, and faculty of KICA colleges and universities contribute an estimated $10.1 million annually in charitable giving and volunteerism.

In addition to the significant impact of campus operations, the report also found that the income being added into the economy as a result of graduates obtaining post-secondary education is significant. The total number of alumni living and working in the state is more than 115,000. Each year, these alumni generate $1.9 billion in economic impact, support and sustain 11,600 jobs, and contribute $115.5 million in state and local taxes. These impacts are based on the added value of earning a degree or credential from a KICA college or university, not alumni full wages.

Student transfer opportunities expanded today after the Kansas Community Colleges and Kansas Independent Colleges announced initiation of a Global Transfer and Course Articulation Agreement that paves the way for students to seamlessly transfer from any Kansas Community College to any Kansas non-profit college or university. After the implementation of the agreement, any student awarded an Associate of Arts (A.A.) or Associate of Science (A.S.) from a Kansas Community College shall be deemed as having fulfilled the general education requirements of their choice of any Kansas Independent Institution. This consistent coordination and ease of transfer will help ensure students graduate on time, with less cost, and with the goal of keeping these students in Kansas.

“Across the country, debate rages on about college access and affordability,” said Kansas Independent College Association President Matthew Lindsey. “We believe that KICA and KACCT have developed a forward-thinking and sustainable resource to demonstrate to Kansas families and taxpayers we are leading the way.”

This new transfer agreement was formally adopted during a signing ceremony on Tuesday, September 20^th at 2:30pm at Friends University in Wichita, following a joint discussion by presidents from both the Kansas Community Colleges and Kansas Independent Colleges on current and future opportunities to serve students better.

Kansas Association of Community College’s Executive Director Heather Morgan praised the partnership, noting “The benefits of the new transfer agreement, the student opportunities it provides, and the potential for additional partnerships to benefit Kansas students reflects the synergy that we need in higher education. We’re working to meet the needs of Kansas learners and this transfer agreement is a key link to ongoing student success and advancement.” 

Dr. Michael Schneider is President of McPherson College and Chair of the KICA Board of Directors, celebrates the event by saying, “The spirit of innovation and the road to success intersect at the passion of a Kansas student. The agreement we signed today is the preamble to the new stories of enterprise that our students will write.”

Kansas leaders understand and hold strong to the quantitative proof that higher education leads to an improved quality of life for students, their families, and their communities. A positive experience while in college in Kansas leads to more students living and working in Kansas, a benefit to the entire state.

Today, more than half of Kansas college students attend one of the state’s 19 community colleges or 1 of the 20 Independent Institutions.

This position allows me to be a voice for students of the Teacher Education Program and also ensures I am modeling the ideals that the Teacher Education Board puts into place.”

KICF awards up to 20 individual scholarships, one for a student at each Foundation member institution. In fact, here are some perspectives on the independent degree experience from our 4.0 students.

“My institution has taught every student that failure is inevitable. This has impacted my journey in my career the most. I am a student that never believed in failure, everything has to be perfect in my eyes. However, the faculty at [my] university taught me that failure is key to success, without failure we would not know what true success is. This has altered my view of not just my career path, but in life as well. I no longer play it safe with assignments, I no longer reach for the bare minimum I know I will get; I no longer settle.”

“Going to [my] university has taught me so much and I genuinely believe the education I have acquired here will help me long after I am finished sitting in the classrooms. This isn’t a school that teaches you just to get you through the class, they teach you so you can better yourself and better your career. [They] has truly prepared me for success using lessons, projects, and community outreach.”

The scholarship was established in 1995 through the generosity of Maud Wyatt, whose bequest has supported the work of KICF and its institutions since 1961. The “Lighthouse on the Prairie” school becomes the 20th member of the Kansas Independent College Association & Foundation

For Immediate Release; March 7th, 2019, Topeka, KS: Barclay College has joined the Kansas Independent College Association (KICA) as their 20th member institution. KICA, founded in 1970, is a not-for-profit organization that works to support, develop, and enhance the competitive standing of its members in order to assure opportunity, and choice, in higher education for all students.

To be a KICA member institution, a Kansas College or University must be (1) Non-profit, (2) Regionally accredited, (3) Undergraduate degree offering, (4) Providing the majority of its educational offerings within the state of Kansas, and (5) In compliance with Kansas statutes regarding open enrollment. As Barclay College, with a 100-year history of faith-based education, meets those five criteria, Dr. Matt Thompson, KICA Board Chair stated; “KICA is pleased to welcome Barclay College to our organization. For Immediate Release December 1, 2017: McPherson, KS and Topeka, KS

The Associated Colleges of Central Kansas (ACCK) is a consortium composed of six private, liberal arts, four-year, church-related, co-educational institutions located within 40 miles of McPherson, Kansas. The six members of ACCK are also members of the Kansas Independent College Fund (KICF), a nonprofit dedicated to strengthening Kansas’ 19 independent, nonprofit, regionally accredited, degree-granting colleges and universities through collaboration.

In light of overlapping membership and programs, the governing boards of the two organizations have been collaborating for the past three years. Since 2015, in an ongoing effort to keep costs low and opportunities high for these campuses, their communities and their students, the administrative functions of ACCK were contractually performed by KICF staff. Having developed a plan to operate ACCK’s existing programs within the construct of KICF, the two organizations have elected to formally merge. On July 1, 2018, ACCK will officially become part of KICF.

This merger will dramatically increase the ability for independent higher education in Kansas to collaborate locally, regionally, and nationally. ACCK Chair and McPherson College President, Michael Schneider, commented, “ACCK has been a great consortium for many years. However, the common challenges of private colleges and universities are not limited to a 40-mile radius. This merger will expand Kansas private institutions' ability to serve students.”

The existing programs that will now be shared across the KICF network include a pooled employee health insurance program for the employees of separate colleges, and, shared educational programs for Special Education and Secondary Methods instruction. These will continue to prepare students to be stewards of their community, helping others from all walks of life. Prioritizing student success was a focus of the merger, said KICF Board President and Kansas Wesleyan University President Matt Thompson, “I deeply value the important role of private higher education in Kansas and the nation. This merger will allow the collective work of the 19 private schools in the state to strengthen the efforts of the member institutions to serve the needs of the state and region. These benefits will provide additional opportunities without adding expenses for students pursuing teacher education.”

In order to maintain continuity of the existing programs, current employees of ACCK will be offered roles within the new KICF structure. Celebrating the expanded capacity of KICF, and the value of merging the two like-minded entities, KICF President Matt Lindsey shared, ““KICF’s strategic vision has focused for a long time on developing the sort of programs for all nineteen colleges that ACCK successfully built over the past fifty years. This merger will allow us to build on what works and grow it effectively, offering programs that strengthen the ability of our colleges serve their mission through collaboration.”
